ASSA ABLOY Entrance Systems wins major mining contract in Canada

ASSA ABLOY Entrance Systems' specialized offer for the mining industry has won a contract for the largest mining project currently in progress in North America. The Rio Tinto – Kitimat Modernization Project is located in a very remote region of Northwest Canada in Kitimat, BC. Rio Tinto Alcan, a division of Rio Tinto, is investing $2.7 billion USD to modernize its aluminum smelter in Kitimat, BC.

The modernization project will increase the smelters current production capacity by more than 48%. Additionally, the smelter will be powered by wholly-owned hydropower and will use Rio Tinto's proprietary smelting technology to reduce the smelters carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 50%.

The Megadoor vertical lifting fabric door is designed to withstand extreme temperatures, high wind conditions, dirt, sand and grit. It features a flexible desTwo years ago, all three Entrance Systems brands involved: Albany, Megadoor and the Canadian AAES service company Central Door and Access, would have been competing against each other for this project. ASSA ABLOY Entrance Systems specialists worked closely with the engineering firm Bechtel to obtain the specification for the rubber doorsand crane-way systems needed for the project. The final contract included both Albany Ultra-Tough Rubber Doors as well as Megadoor – System 1500 Crane-way Doors.
